The mission of the MN Spina Bifida Association is to increase awareness about Spina Bifida and enhance the lives of those affected. The MN SBA was founded in 1973 and is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. We strive to promote, encourage, and stimulate the treatment, on-going care, education, socialization, career development and habilitation of people with Spina Bifida.
They also act as a support group for new families entering the world of Spina Bifida which literally means “Split Spine”. Spina bifida occurs in the womb before the mother even knows she is pregnant. Spina Bifida is a condition that occurs when the spinal column does not fully close during gestation. Babies born with Spina Bifida will need surgery within 24hrs after birth to close the lesion in their back. This results in some nerve damage and has life long effects. Each person affected with Spina Bifida will have unique challenges; Spina Bifida is known as a “Snowflake” disorder meaning no 2 cases are the same.
We at the MN SBA strive to help those affected and educate families on what they may expect and be there to help them through the new and challenging journey they are about to enter.
