11/15 Movie Trip

The Shining wowed and horrified audiences both when it came out in 1980.  Nearly 40 years later it’s sequel is here.  Paul McGuire Grimes of Paul’s Trip to the Movies tells us if he thinks it’s worth seeing.

 

DOCTOR SLEEP (in theaters)

Danny Torrence and his mother, Wendy, may have survived the horrors of the Overlook Hotel but that doesn’t mean that those events didn’t stick with them for life. Now as an adult, Dan has tried to shut away those memories and quiet “the shine” within him, but the years of trauma have taken their toll. He’s become an alcoholic spiraling into a messy life. He wasn’t the only one gifted with the shine as he learns that a young girl named Abra may be one of the most powerful kids with that ability. She becomes the target of Rose the Hat and her gang known as the True Knot. They hunt out kids with the shine killing them using their steam/shine to give them life. As Rose becomes aware of Abra’s abilities, she attempts to track her down and it’s up to Dan to face his old demons in order to protect her.

Is It Worth Your Trip to the Movies? It’s deeply satisfying and should stick with you especially if you are a Stephen King fan.

CHARLIE’S ANGELS (in theaters)

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska are the latest actresses to join the ranks of Farrah Fawcett, Jacquelin Smith, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu to call themselves Charlie’s Angels. Naomi Scott (Aladdin) plays Elena who works as an engineer at a leading technology firm. She’s working on the Calisto, a gadget not quite ready to be produced. The greedy CEO ignores her concerns and now other nefarious criminals want their hands on it putting Elena’s life in danger. Hot on her trail are a couple of Charlie’s angels ready to protect and recruit her along the way.

Is It Worth Your Trip to the Movies? Elizabeth Banks may have too many irons in the fire with this kind of movie.

LAST CHRISTMAS (in theaters)

Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding attempt to bring some Christmas cheer to theaters with Last Christmas. Emilia Clarke follows up her run on Game of Thrones in a drastically different fashion. She stars as Kate who is down on her luck at Christmastime. She’s a budding actress who works at a Christmas shop in London. Her life is a big old mess until she meets Tom outside her store. He’s played by Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians. He’s good looking, embraces life with a positive outlook, and may just be the guardian angel she needs at Christmas. Also stars Emma Thompson as Kate’s mother and Michelle Yeoh as the shop owner she works for.
