4/19 Movie Trip

Paul McGuire Grimes gave us three great movies to see this weekend.

TEEN SPIRIT (in theaters)

Violet is a shy and introverted teenager born of Polish heritage but lives in the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. She loves to sing even if it means doing it in dingy bars behind her disapproving mother’s back. Word spreads through school that auditions will be held in their city for “Teen Spirit” a televised singing competition looking for the next big pop star. All of the kids audition, but Violet is the one who is picked to go onto the next round. She has the voice, but lacks stage presence and performing skills. Since she’s underage she has a washed up opera singer pose as her uncle and manager. As she keeps advancing in the competition, she gets swept up in the sudden fame and notoriety of going from loner girl to potential teen idol.

– Is It Worth Your Trip to the Movies? This should be right up my alley, but it’s hard to like a movie when you don’t root for the lead character.

UNICORN STORE (Netflix Streaming)

Kit is in the transition period of her life where she’s having a hard time growing up. She’s a painter who expresses her opinions in a variety of creative ways but she’s going nowhere with it and failing out of school. She spends far too much time sulking around her parents’ house. They’re losing faith in her ability to grow up, but she wants to prove them wrong by getting a temp job in a corporate setting. As you can imagine, Kit doesn’t feel like she really fits in, and to make matters worse, her new boss is a bit creepy. She starts to receive these mysterious cards with her name on them summoning to a worn down warehouse called “The store”. Inside she meets a flamboyant man who calls himself “The Salesman” He taps into her childlike innocence and creative nature and tells her that this is a unicorn store where she can one day own one of her own. Her childhood obsession over unicorns is finally becoming a reality for Kit. She befriends a guy named Virgil who works at a hardware store, and they set out to create a shed and living area for the unicorn.

TRIPLE FRONTIER (Netflix Streaming)

In Triple Frontier, Oscar Isaac plays Santiago Garcia who has spent many years in the military hunting down drug cartels. He has some unfinished business with a drug lord named Lorea who is held up in a safe house in Columbia hoarding millions upon millions of dollars somewhere on the property. Santiago’s girlfriend is desperate to get out of the clutches of Lorea and can give intel on his whereabouts if Santiago can get her and her brother out of the country safely. Santiago heads back to the United States and recruits his old team from the Armed Services for one last mission together. His band of brothers has all moved on after their time serving and each suffer from PTSD. The price tag at the end of the mission is too great for any of them to pass up knowing that the money could help them advance and get out of the struggles they’ve found themselves in post-war. The clock is ticking as the men only have a short window of time when Lorea’s family is at church to find and take the money back from Lorea.
