1/21 Movie Trip

TCL Movie guy and creator of Paul’s Trip to the Movies, Paul McGuire Grimes, gets us caught up on some streaming series you may have missed out on that he thinks are worth a watch.

COBRA KAI Season 4 (Netflix)

The hit Netflix series Cobra Kai is back for a fourth season and all ten episodes are now streaming. Rivalries don’t need to last forever, but some certainly take longer to mend. The Cobra Kai members under Martin Kove’s John Kreese continue to play nasty and aggressive. Johnny Lawrence’s group Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do, led by Daniel LaRusso, know they’ll have to work together if there’s any hope at beating Cobra Kai at the tournament. There’s an agreement at play that the losing team will be shut down. It seems easy enough, but the deeper test will be whether Johnny (William Zabka) and Daniel (Ralph Macchio) can maintain their current friendship for their two teams to come together. In true Cobra Kai fashion, old friends and enemies return as Kreese pays a visit to his old buddy Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) who was last saw in The Karate Kid Part III.

Cobra Kai remains mostly family friendly despite some profanity. There are great lessons to be learned for teens and pre-teens and there’s some adult humor along the way with Johnny’s character. The show retains that reboot nostalgia and heart that made it catch on with viewers. I would like to see some big changes with season five to push the storytelling in a new direction and have these characters evolve even further.

HACKS Season 1 (HBO Max)

Jean Smart gives another brilliant performance in Hacks. She plays Deborah Vance, a Las Vegas stand-up comedian who sees the writing on the wall for her residency after the number of performances are cut down. She’s been working for decades but doesn’t have the bite she once had as she hasn’t updated her set in years. She hires Ava, a young comedy writer to freshen up her material to stay relevant. Deborah’s not one to welcome new ideas and quickly clashes with Ava’s style.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING Season 1 (Hulu)

If you love true crime podcasts, you will love the fresh spin the comedy series Only Murders in the Building has over the genre. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez star as residents of a wealthy New York apartment complex. Martin plays a former TV actor who’s starred in a detective series and now life is imitating art as he finds himself as a real-life detective after a young man is found dead in the apartment. He partners with a middling theater director (played by Martin Short) and Gomez’s character to solve the murder and start a podcast detailing their findings.

Steve Martin and Martin Short have been working together for decades from Three Amigos to Father of the Bride and many comedy tours in between. Their chemistry and banter are priceless and gives this series that extra degree of delight and joy.
