Crazy Rich Asians

It’s the quintessential romantic comedy with a twist. Our movie critic, Paul McGuire Grimes of Paul’s Trip to the Movies , went to the coast to find out how they brought their crazy world to life. CRAZY RICH ASIANS (theatrical release) Nick Young is one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors. His family comes from a long lineage of wealth and prestige in Singapore. He currently lives in New York with his beautiful girlfriend, Rachel Chu. Nick’s invited back to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding and wants to introduce Rachel to his friends and family. She has no idea what she’s getting herself into as she’s completely unaware of the Young family legacy and the expectations set in place for whomever he is dating. Her harshest critic will be Nick’s mother who will stop at nothing to destroy their relationship. -Starring: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, Awkwafina -Based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Kwan. Fans of the book will love the movie adaptation -First major studio release in 25 years since The Joy Luck Club to feature an all-Asian cast -Constance Wu (ABC’s Fresh of the Boat) and Henry Golding have fantastic chemistry together. It’s easy to fall in love with their character. This is Golding’s first movie. He’s a complete natural on camera and has major charm and sophistication to him. -Rom-com through and through and is elevated by its intelligence, depth, and high stakes. Nick has to stand up to his mother on behalf of Rachel and their relationship. We get to see her stand up for herself and put her foot down to stay true to her moral compass. -Perfectly captures the humor of the book. Ken Jeong and Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8) are scene-stealers making you laugh every time they’re on screen. -Lesson in Asian culture, exquisitely captures the extravagance of Singapore with its jaw-dropping wealth and luxury. The costumes and production designs are beautiful. I wanted to wear a variety of the suits Nick wears in the money. -The focus on family and traditions got me thinking about my family and the memories I have of my grandmother and the recipes we’d make and games we’d play together.
