3/19 Movie Trip

Movie critic Paul McGuire Grimes, the creator of Paul’s Trip to the Movies, interviewed Spike Lee and he gives us his review of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (HBO Max)

DC and Zack Snyder fans were bewildered and confused upon the release of Justice League in 2017. It didn’t feel like the Zack Snyder tone we’d seen so far given the rewrites and reshoots at the hands of director Joss Whedon who came in after Snyder left production due to a family emergency. Thanks to HBO Max and a massive fan movement, we’re now getting Snyder’s true vision with Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Audiences were left gasping at the death of Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Justice League kicks off in the wake of Superman’s death as Bruce Wayne/Batman partners with Diana Prince/Wonder Woman to gather a group of other heroes: Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman to put their special powers together to stop an evil force known as Steppenwolf and his flying minions. That’s not all as Steppenwolf happens to be working alongside villains DeSaad and Darkseid.

Now you may be thinking, what’s different about this director’s cut? Frankly, everything is different as it feels like a brand new and complete movie. Snyder’s cut is a four-hour epic divided into six parts and an epilogue. Now before you roll your eyes, I watched it in one sitting and the four hours goes by pretty swiftly. There are title cards for each chapter that give a quick mental refresh or a trip to the bathroom if needed. Think of it like binging your favorite series. A movie of this length could never be released in theaters, which makes HBO Max the perfect home for it.

Zack Snyder delivers the ultimate gift to his fans. This cut of Justice League is epic and exhilarating from start to finish. It brought out a new appreciation for his work and his version with DC’s beloved characters.

SPIKE LEE Interview

Spike Lee’s latest film, Da 5 Bloods, was mentioned in the list of big Oscar snubs. The Netflix film received one nomination for Best Original Score, but many Oscar pundits thought Delroy Lindo could get a nomination for Best Actor and Chadwick Boseman was thought to be considered for Best Supporting Actor given he received Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG nominations for his work in the film. It’s pretty confident in saying Boseman will still go home a winner for Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
