Fall Garden Checklist

Ryan McEnaney from Bailey Nurseries helps you get your garden ready for fall. Find out what you need to do now, and what you’ll want to finish before the end of October.

What to do in September:

  • Clean up vegetables
  • Cut back hydrangeas — unless it’s an Annabelle hydrangeas
  • Stop fertilizing

First week of October:

  • Weed
  • Water plants until first frost
  • Remove tomato cages and clean them before storing

October 15 – 31:

  • Cover the base of shrubs with wood chips or mulch
  • Mow your lawn
  • Take shredded leaves and blow into garden
  • Remove old vegetables
  • Prune back spring-blooming perennials
  • Cut off dead or broken branches
