There has been a lot of talk about how to protect your physical self during this COVID-19 pandemic. Life Coach Barbara Churchill shares ways you can reduce your stress levels and lead yourself and your family through this challenging time.
TIP #1: BREATHE (SQUARE BREATHING)
We want to slow down our nervous system and the quickest way to do that is to practice focused breathing. Square breathing means you picture building a square with each breath – on the count of 4.
— Inhale for 4 counts, building each side of the square as you count
— Pause. Exhale for 4 counts disassembling the square
— It keeps your mind focused on the square so there’s less chance of distraction
TIP #2: ALLOW THE FEELING
— We don’t like to feel what we deem as negative feelings, so we resist them
— That creates even more stress and we can become consumed by them
— Allowing the feelings to be there – without judgment – is what’s needed, then let them pass
TIP #3: DETACH AND REDIRECT
— We’re surrounded with 24/7 information and not all of it is reliable
— Choose your trusted news source and keep your consumption to a minimum.
–When we surround our brains with this heightened sense of fear, our brains can’t handle it and we become very focused on ourselves.
–The best way to feel better is to do something for someone else
TIP #4: TUNE IN
— Start to really notice what your brain is telling you and ask yourself if it’s useful
— With many of us working from home we have that extra time we aren’t using commuting
— Use this time to slow down, meditate
