2/21 Movie Trip

Paul McGuire Grimes of Paul’s Trip to the Movies has some suggestions for you to check out this weekend.

THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL (Amazon Prime original series)

Season 3 of the Emmy-winning hit The Marvous Mrs. Maisel is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Miriam “Midge” Maisel’s career as a stand-up comic continues to grow as she embarks on a U.S. tour opening for crooner Shy Baldwin. She, along with her feisty manager Susie, take on the USO and Las Vegas and learn what life on the road is life. It sounds glamourous but Midge is far away from her New York home with her two kids. Her love life is even more complicated after calling off an engagement to wealthy doctor Benjamin and sleeping with her ex-husband, Joel. Midge has to decide if she wants to be in a relationship with Joel again or if this was a one-time thing. Susie’s work as Midge’s manager faces extra hurdles as she takes on the notoriously difficult Sophie Lennon as a client. Sophie is another stand-up comic who feels threatened by Midge and wants to make her Broadway debut in a heavy drama.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD (OnDemand, Blu-Ray, DVD)

Matthew Rhys (The Americans) stars as Lloyd Vogel, a writer for Esquire Magazine tasked with writing a brief piece about Fred Rogers, played by 2-Time Oscar winner Tom Hanks. He scoffs at the idea, but Fred’s mission in life is the lesson Lloyd needs to hear to soften his jaded outlook on life.

A TALE OF TWO QUEENS (film series at Trylon Cinema)

Last June, I was joined by My Talk 1071.1’s Bradley Traynor for an LGBTQ film series at the Trylon Cinema in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. We showed The Boys in the Band and The Celluloid Closet which concluded with an insightful Q&A with the audience. The Trylon invited us back to continue this series, and this time we are celebrating drag culture with the documentary The Queen from 1968 and 1994’s The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Sunday’s movies will be followed by a Q&A as well. We would love to have a sold-out crowd and keep this series going. Tickets are now available on the Trylon’s website.

Tickets are $8 and are now available here.
