5/31 Movie Trip

Paul McGuire Grimes is here to tell us about three movies you can see in the theater this weekend.

ROCKETMAN (in theaters)

When you think of Elton John, you may think of his beautiful songs, the glitz, the glamour, and the tantrums. It’s all here in Rocketman. At a young age, Elton was a gifted piano player. He could play anything he heard on first play. He came from a broken home, as his parents were never fully supportive or loving toward him. He took inspiration from Elvis Presley and started playing piano professionally. When he started working with lyricist Bernie Taupin, his career took off. Their music together became huge hits. He had a distinct look and sound, but the pressure of fame, being gay, and a controlling manager and lover started taking its toll. Elton turned to drugs, alcohol, sex, and every device to cope.

Is It Worth Your Trip to the Movies? Egerton is “Captain Fantastic” as Elton John. Can’t wait to listen to his music tomorrow at work.

BOOKSMART (in theaters)

Olivia Wilde makes her directorial debut with Booksmart, a smart coming of age, high school drama. Molly and Amy are best friends and have always taken their academics seriously. They’re strong-willed, feminists with big personalities. They don’t have the greatest reputation in school despite Molly being class president. They have ambitious paths after senior year, but on their last day they decide to let loose. They find out the extremely popular Nick is having a grandiose party and decide to prove to the rest of their classmates that they can be both fun and smart. It’s a wild, unpredictable night that doesn’t quite go as smoothly as planned.
