October 7, 2008- Have You Ever Seen A Child Cry During The Song Happy Birthday? I Have

My youngest daughter, Delaney, turned 3 this past weekend and we celebrated with a birthday party at Aamodts Apple Orchard. We planned everything out perfectly or so we thought. We had goodie bags, decorations, activities, apple picking, cake, popcorn, apple cider and oops, no nap for a toddler. About an hour before the party, we knew we were in for trouble, but I faced a fit head on and told Delaney that if she was naughty another child would get her birthday presents. It worked, it really worked. The entire three hour party was going wonderfully, until we brought out the cake. To say Delaney is shy is an understatement, but really, what child doesn’t love cake and the Happy Birthday song? Mine. We had three candles and 20 people singing Happy Birthday when my little girl ducked as far as she could into my husband’s arms and started crying, huge tears streaming down her face. How do you console a girl over a song? Cake, a big piece of cake! It worked wonders. So now, four years of parenting I have now officially seen it all, at least I think I have.
